Council praises firefighters after house fire; fire department reports about 80 smoke detectors installed

Council Member Mike Mumper recognized the Michiana Shores Volunteer Fire Department and the New Buffalo Township Fire Department for their response to a residential fire that occurred several weeks earlier. He said the blaze escalated from a fire pit in the early morning, four young men escaped the home, and one occupant was hospitalized for heat-related injuries but is ‘‘doing well.’’ He also thanked Superintendent Rick Reitz for checking water pressure to support firefighting efforts.
Fire Chief Jamie Flick described the department’s community connect smoke detector program and encouraged residents who need smoke detectors or help with installation to contact the department. Flick reported that “approximately 80 smoke detectors have been installed throughout the area” and reminded residents to take precautions heading into the Fourth of July holiday.
