Rockbridge County to pilot flood-mapping program tied to county GIS

Rockbridge County will test a flood-mapping program for a year to help forecast flooding events up to 72 hours ahead, Chief Nathan Ramsey said at the Local Emergency Planning Committee meeting Dec. 4.
Ramsey told the committee the pilot will be tied to the county's GIS and is intended to assist emergency planners and first responders in anticipating flood hazards. He also said the county is adopting CalTopo as a new platform to assist in search-and-rescue operations by allowing responders to pinpoint a victim on a map and track movements in real time. Ramsey confirmed the county has signed a contract with AP Triton to develop a strategic plan for emergency services implementation.
The pilot is described as a one-year trial intended to inform operational decisions; the meeting minutes did not specify a vendor for the mapping software beyond the county GIS integration, nor a start date for the pilot. The committee did not record a formal motion or vote on the pilot during the meeting.
