Milford committee rewriting STTR ordinances, plans stricter rules and higher fees

Council Member Kristen Velasco told the Milford Town Board that the town’s short‑term rental (STTR) committee is revising the town’s STTR ordinances, which were adopted in 1982.
"The STTR Committee is in the process of rewriting the ordinances and is on track to have them completed by the end of 2026," Velasco said, and she urged owners of STTRs to monitor the town website and Town Facebook group for updates and public‑hearing notices. The committee plans tighter, more well‑defined criteria, increased fees and more County involvement; fee revenue would be used to update town record‑keeping and possibly add staff to help implement the rules.
Resident Randy Meschutt, a former property inspector, recommended that the new regulations address insurance coverage for STTR operators, saying many standard homeowner policies may not cover rental uses. Velasco said she would consult the town attorney to determine whether the town should require insurance verification as part of the regulations.
The committee’s progress was reaffirmed later in the meeting during the Committee Updates section. No ordinance text was presented at the meeting and the Board did not take a vote on regulatory language; the committee will return draft language for public hearings before any formal adoption.
