Planners recommend rezoning for At Ease Retreat property in Vesuvius

The Rockbridge County Planning Commission recommended that the Board of Supervisors approve a zoning map amendment to rezone 4.42 acres of tax map #41‑A‑5A from Residential General (R‑1) to Agricultural and General Uses (A‑2) to allow a lodge/resort use at 352 Tye River Turnpike in Vesuvius.
Community Development staff introduced the application and a map showing the split zoning. Applicant Linda Schatz told the commission the property was purchased in May 2024 and currently contains five rental units including the Osceola Mill house and a detached cabin. "The property was purchased in May 2024, and there are currently 5 units that are available for rent as part of the country inn establishment, including the Osceola Mill house and a separate detached cabin," Schatz said.
Commission discussion noted that rezoning the R‑1 portion would bring the historic mill into conformance with the county's zoning for the proposed use. With no public comment, Commissioner Anthony Subrizi moved to recommend approval; the motion passed unanimously. The matter will be considered next by the Board of Supervisors.
