Providers urge DCHA to fix pest, inspection and accessibility problems; some praise pilot health clinics in housing

Service providers and public-health partners told the committee that pests, rodent infestations, fire-safety and poor maintenance persist in public housing. Community Concierge Care and other health partners said on-site primary care clinics are expanding and helping residents.
Several nonprofit providers described continuing operational gaps that hamper supportive housing outcomes and resident health. Janet Phoenix of Children's National's asthma program urged DCHA to appoint a point person to coordinate an effective rodent-and-pest-control strategy and to train maintenance staff on remediation and prevention.
At the same time some providers described bright spots. Erin Athey from Community Concierge Care said on-site primary care clinics launched inside several public-housing properties are delivering immunizations, prescriptions and chronic-care management; she reported fast growth in visits and resident engagement since 2024. Providers urged DCHA to pair these public-health efforts with more consistent unit repairs and clearer timelines for vacant-unit remediation.
