Committee approves hire of street maintenance worker under nepotism policy

The Salary and Personnel Committee for the City of Monroe voted unanimously to approve the hiring of Nick Hawkins as a street maintenance worker. The chair moved to approve the hire and, after a roll-call vote in which Alder Grenzo, Alder Cleveland, Alderman Trueheart and Alder Wartner each voted "Aye," the chair said, "That motion passes."
Luke Newenschwander, street superintendent, introduced himself to the committee and recommended Hawkins for the position. Newenschwander said, "Basically, Nick Hawkins, I would like to hire him starting next Monday," and added that "His brother currently works for utilities at the treatment plant," while saying he did not foresee any supervisory conflicts between the two employees. The committee conducted a roll-call vote and approved the hiring by unanimous affirmative votes.
