Assistant superintendent reports low early-literacy rates; junior/high school attendance improves

Dr. Nikki Saxton, assistant superintendent and elementary principal, told the board that early-literacy performance on the first assessment was weak in several grades: "Literacy development is at 17% for pre-k, 60% kindergarten, 21% first grade, and 35% second grade." Saxton said math development was higher in pre-K (67%) but lower in some elementary grades (35% kindergarten, 50% first grade, 25% second grade). Saxton said the results are "very close to last year's performance."
Saxton also reviewed attendance data as of Oct. 10, 2025, reporting that junior high attendance rose to 97.15% from 96.12% in 2024 and that high school attendance rose to 97.57% from 94.94% in 2024. Board members received the assessment and attendance information as part of the monitoring calendar; no formal action was taken.
