The Town Council approved a special-exception for a 55-foot telecommunications tower at 20995 Blue and Gold Drive filed by the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Planning Commission Chair Dan Talbot said the tower's purpose was to broadcast church services; Talbot described it as a radio broadcast antenna with an approximately five-mile radius. Resident Wayne Printz asked whether it was for television or radio and expressed concern about radiation; Talbot and staff explained Rockingham County construction rules and the stated broadcast purpose.
The Planning Commission recommended approval unanimously. On Feb. 18 the council approved the recommendation, but the voice vote recorded one dissent: Council Member Virginia Fulginiti voted no while four members voted yes. The council noted the county's construction standards would apply to the church’s installation plans.
