Board continues Southern Towers cell‑tower variance and special use permit to May 13

At the start of the public hearings the board heard two linked items for a telecommunications installation (ZPH2026‑00014 and ZPH2026‑00016) at 2049 Upper Laurel Drive — a variance to exceed the 100‑foot district height limit and a special use permit for a 150‑foot monopole with a 4‑foot lightning rod within a fenced compound.
Applicant representative Nick Steinhaus said the applications were originally filed only as a special use permit and that subsequent review indicated a variance for height was required. Steinhaus requested a continuance so the applicant could present Verizon's RF engineer and additional due diligence. "We came here today to request a continuance of this hearing," he said, noting the RF engineer could appear at the May meeting.
The board voted to continue both matters to the regular May 13 meeting so the variance can be heard before the special use permit and so the applicant can present the RF analysis. Staff noted standard submittal sequencing (telecommunications permit before site plan and building permit) and advised the board and public on the procedural implications of the continuance.
