The Buncombe County Board of Adjustment approved a variance on March 11 allowing two existing metal storage buildings at 18 Moffett Hill Road to remain closer to the side property line than the county setback allows. Planner Jason Payne told the board both sheds exceed the 320‑square‑foot threshold and are currently unpermitted.
The applicant explained that the couple purchased the home in 2015 and used existing fence and pipe markers when siting the sheds; after a later survey they discovered one shed exceeded the setback by about 5 feet and the other by about 10 inches. The applicant said moving the structures would require substantial foundation work and expense. The board adopted findings of fact, agreed that a hardship existed given the lot conditions and the manner the sheds were located, and approved the variance with a staff‑added condition that building permits must be obtained for the sheds.
Board members noted the neighbor had provided a letter indicating no objection, and staff will draft and file an order reflecting the approved variance and the building‑permit requirement.
