Gull Lake board suspends student after finding knife possession, orders counseling and home-visit verification

The Gull Lake Community Schools Board of Trustees unanimously voted May 1, 2026, to suspend Student A for the remainder of the 2025–26 school year after a closed-session disciplinary hearing. Attorney Daniel Martin read the proposed resolution to the board when it reconvened at 10:13 a.m.
The resolution states, "A preponderance of the evidence establishes that on April 20, 2026, the Student possessed a dangerous weapon, a knife with a blade over 3 inches," language read aloud to the board by Attorney Daniel Martin. The board also found by clear and convincing evidence that the Student did not possess the item "for use as a weapon or for direct or indirect delivery to another person for use as a weapon," and concluded that expulsion was not warranted based on factors including the Student's age, disciplinary history, disability status, seriousness of the behavior, safety risk and potential for restorative interventions.
In addition to the suspension, the resolution requires the Student to complete specific restorative practices before the start of the 2026–27 school year: outside individual counseling at least monthly, outside family counseling at least monthly, and a monthly check-in with the building principal. The resolution further requires the Student, by not later than May 15, 2026, to allow Deputy Root to conduct a home visit with the parent present to verify the presence, location and secure storage of any weapons. The resolution also directs that "all firearms must be stored, locked, with ammunition secured separately and inaccessible to Student." The board noted that failure to complete the restorative requirements could lead to additional disciplinary consequences and that any return to school would occur under a safety plan determined by building administration.
The board directed administrators to implement all terms of the resolution and to promptly meet with the Student's parent/guardian to determine appropriate educational services under state and federal law. The motion to accept the resolution, presented by Attorney Daniel Martin and moved by Treasurer Laura Zervic with support from Vice President Desiree LaDuke, passed unanimously (AYES: Paulose-Murphy, Keene, Mendez, Zervic, LaDuke; ABSENT: McCann, Scott-Rhodes).
