Commissioner Rob Roberts told the board, “I was looking at this number on this, which is 175,000,” and urged the commission to add a certified airflow study so the county would not return for more money later. Katz and other commissioners agreed the unit should be replaced but supported adding contingency funds for testing first.
Supporters said the archives budget has sufficient funds for the replacement and argued an upfront certified study could identify duct problems or contaminants that a vendor-issued check might not document. County staff described employee complaints including intermittent gas-like odors and dizziness; board members asked whether ductwork replacements could increase costs but noted the priority was restoring safe, climate-controlled conditions for both workers and records.
After discussion the commission voted on an amendment to add funding for a certified airflow study and then on the amended replacement resolution. The chair announced the result as recorded: 18–4–0 in favor, and the amended resolution passed. Commissioners said staff will proceed with the procurement and follow-up testing and will report back if additional work is required.
