Superintendent warns budget uncertainty could affect free meals after September

Superintendent Jamie Kraatz told the Committee‑of‑the‑Whole that “as of today, we still do not have a budget to plan this school year,” and that the district “can still offer free breakfast and lunch through September” but that future meal provision would depend on the state budget process. Kraatz said the district would be able to continue operations if the state government were to shut down but that other districts may not be able to do the same.
Kraatz also reported an on‑site audit by district auditors Yeo and Yeo and announced that Glenn Maleyko of Dearborn is the new Michigan State Superintendent; she said auditors will report to the board as soon as possible. The superintendent raised the possibility of joining vetted class‑action lawsuits related to alleged harmful effects of social media and video games on children and said Thrun Law Firm had vetted those cases; the board discussed the option but took no formal action at the committee meeting.
