Grand County approves $1.92M National Forest distribution for local schools

Grand County commissioners on May 13 approved a resolution to distribute $1,922,251.11 in National Forest Reserve apportionment funds to the county’s two school districts.
Treasurer Marcy Wheatley told the board the county received $1,922,251.11 this year and recommended the split that the board approved: West Grand School District will receive $442,458.98 and East Grand School District will receive $1,479,792.13. The board voted to adopt Resolution No. 2025‑5‑7 and authorized presentation of the checks.
Liz Bauer, West Grand superintendent, thanked the commissioners for the support and said the money is not guaranteed year to year. “We know every year you say… this is never guaranteed,” Bauer said, adding the funds make an important difference amid uncertain state and federal support. Brad, East Grand’s superintendent, said the distribution is “a win‑win situation” and asked the commissioners to advocate to federal representatives to preserve the funding mechanism.
The distribution follows county policy on National Forest apportionment and the board presented the checks in a brief ceremony. Commissioners noted the two districts will use the funds according to district priorities, including capital improvements and services that support pupils.
