Trent Woods sets March public hearing on town-owned sidewalk regulations, debates scooter exception

Town Attorney Aaron Arnette opened discussion on a proposed ordinance to amend the Code of Ordinances to adopt Town-Owned Sidewalk Regulations. Much of the discussion centered on Sec. 26-70, particularly Exception (5), which covers battery-powered scooters. The ordinance language under consideration would permit battery-powered scooters "used in a safe and reasonable manner, in accordance with their respective manufacturer guidelines, while the user is wearing a protective helmet." The board agreed to schedule a public hearing on the ordinance at the March Board of Commissioners meeting.
Clerk Holly Willis was directed to prepare for the March public hearing so the board can collect additional public input and consider final ordinance language. No ordinance was adopted at this meeting; the hearing will provide an opportunity for fuller public comment and any amendments the board might consider.
