Pedro Chavez unanimously chosen as Santa Paula mayor; Carlos Juarez named vice mayor

The Santa Paula City Council unanimously appointed Pedro Chavez as mayor and Carlos Juarez as vice mayor during its Dec. 11 reorganization, following the swearing-in of two newly elected members.
City Clerk Julie Latshaw administered oaths of office for Leslie Cornejo (District 5) and Gabriela Ornelas (District 1) before the council opened nominations for its leadership slots. Gabriela Ornelas nominated Vice Mayor Pedro Chavez for mayor; with no additional nominations, the council closed nominations and voted by roll call to appoint Chavez.
Councilmember Crosswhite nominated Carlos Juarez for vice mayor; the nomination was seconded and the council again voted unanimously. The council’s procedural steps and roll-call votes were conducted per the process the clerk outlined for mayoral selection.
Pedro Chavez, in his remarks after the appointments, thanked community members and noted infrastructure investments completed under the outgoing council.
