Lockney council bans TikTok on city-owned devices
Summary
The City of Lockney amended its personnel policy to prohibit installation and use of TikTok and similar apps on City-provided devices in accordance with Senate Bill 1893 and Chapter 620 of the Government Code.
The Lockney City Council voted unanimously Nov. 19 to add a prohibition on installation and use of TikTok and similar applications on city-owned information and communication technology (ICT) devices. The proposed language added as Section 35 to the personnel policy states: "The City of Lockney prohibits the installation and use of the TikTok Application and similar applications not specifically approved by the City Manager on any City of Lockney provided information and communication technology (ICT) services, facilities and devices."
The council identified the change as necessary to comply with Senate Bill 1893 and Government Code Chapter 620. Councilmember Dart Carthel made the motion and Councilmember Donnie McLaughlin seconded; all members present voted in favor. The policy text instructs employees to route questions about application approvals to the City Manager.
