Planning commission approves 100‑foot façade for Lusby AutoZone

Jessica Catano, planner 3 for the Department of Planning and Zoning, presented LARC case 2024‑02 for a proposed Lusby AutoZone at 11749 H G Truman Road and explained the Lusby Town Center zoning ordinance limits façade length to 50 feet unless the commission grants an extension. Catano said staff reviewed the application against design guideline criteria and recommended approval of a 100‑foot façade to meet the applicant’s design needs.
"Staff finds the proposal consistent with the Lusby Town Center design guidelines with the exception of the facade length requirement," Catano said, noting the applicant provided storefront windows, awnings and an eight‑foot sidewalk that met activation and pedestrian‑connectivity conditions. Commissioner (speaker 2) moved to approve staff's recommendation; a second was recorded and the commission approved the façade extension by voice vote, recorded as 7‑0.
Speakers from the public raised concerns later in the meeting about duplicative auto‑parts businesses and whether that pad could host other retail that better serves Lusby. Commissioners and staff did not reverse the approval; the action on the façade stands as approved during the Feb. 27 meeting.
