Uintah Fire District reports rise in calls, volunteer strength and recovery update for injured firefighter

Jeremy Raymond, Director of the Uintah Fire District, briefed the Vernal City Council on district operations and an injured firefighter's recovery on April 15. Raymond said the firefighter recently returned home from the burn center after two skin graft procedures and is recovering ahead of schedule; he is weaned off pain medication, able to drive and expected to return to limited duty. Raymond reported the district had 654 fire-related calls in 2025, 2,360 public relations hours and 8,107 training hours, and noted that many firefighters are on-call volunteers (102 paid on-call volunteers) while the district employs three full-time staff.
Raymond described the district's contributions to city services — including fire inspections, plan reviews and wildland-interface inspections — and noted Vernal City has the highest call volume in the district. He warned that dry conditions are increasing fire risk and thanked the Council for enacting open burn restrictions. Councilmembers thanked Raymond for the update and the district's service.
