Log Cabin approves MOU with volunteer fire department effective Oct. 1, 2024 amid questions about response and reporting

The Log Cabin City Council voted Aug. 15 to accept a revised Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Log Cabin Volunteer Fire Department (LCVFD), effective Oct. 1, 2024.
Chief Cory Abbe and volunteer Linda Keener represented the department in a discussion with the council about changes in the draft, including a suggested decrease in the city’s annual payment in the draft. Chief Abbe told council that the department "has not asked the City for an increase in the yearly amount in two years, and they rely on that money to help pay for the new truck payment," and said he would provide monthly reports and invoices. Mayor Jennifer Williams raised concerns about the department’s response to a recent local disaster; Chief Abbe said three people responded (one inside the city and two in the county) and explained the department followed the county Emergency Action Plan because it does not yet have an EAP with the city.
Council discussed response times, roster and recruitment and the possibility of having a city representative attend LCVFD meetings. Councilmember Randy Page moved to accept the MOU as drafted with an effective date of Oct. 1, 2024; Bill Sims seconded. The motion passed with all members present voting in favor. The council directed that the department submit monthly reports with invoices as part of the MOU implementation and noted the county ESD #13 discussion about a possible departmental merge is on hold pending further budgeting by that district.
