Commission approves fire-pond clean-out with conditions to protect wetlands

Susan J. Kelsey reported that Stephen Dean had inquired about cleaning out the fire pond on Route 126 near Kellogg Pond because silt had reduced its usefulness for firefighting. Members recalled the Commission's prior practice of waiving application fees for fire-pond clean-outs when best management practices are followed. Downs, representing the highway department, confirmed that spoils would be deposited at the pond perimeter and not spread beyond the banks.
Ellery Sinclair moved that the Commission approve the request to clean out the fire pond, waive both the application and fee, and require that spoils not be spread beyond the pond perimeter and that the project be undertaken under dry conditions; the motion was seconded by Marleen Van Gulick and passed unanimously. Kelsey will provide copies of the minutes to Downs to give to Dean. The approval is conditioned on the spoils deposition and dry-conditions requirement recorded in the motion.
