Commission approves inspection for historic log cabin salvaged from Elbowoods

Commissioners discussed the cabin’s historical value and potential community uses if restoration is feasible, including an interpretive visitor space or seasonal programming.
"The wood itself is from the town of Elbowoods, and that town no longer exists," the presenter said while walking commissioners through photographs of deteriorating exterior plaster and exposed, rotting logs. Staff presented two inspection quotes — iSpy Inspections at about $2,465 and Blacktrail at about $1,400 — and recommended iSpy for a more thorough evaluation. The commission moved and approved proceeding with an inspection to determine whether the building can be salvaged or if removal and park redevelopment would be the better option.
Commissioners emphasized they want a clear, documented assessment before committing funds for restoration. If the inspection shows the structure is salvageable, staff said they will return with recommended next steps and cost estimates; if not, commissioners discussed opening the site for other park improvements such as an amphitheater or event space.
