Hampton council spotlights nine placemaking nominees; The Point takes top honor

The Hampton City Council held a Spotlight on Citizens ceremony to present its Placemaking Awards, recognizing projects that the council said strengthen public spaces through design, revitalization and community connection. Bruce, one of the presenters, said there were "9 nominees in 5 different categories" and that the projects cited were completed in 2013.
Mayor Wallace and council members attended; Bruce outlined the award criteria as projects that "improve the community through revitalization, blight reduction, historic preservation, sensitive infill, or appropriate high-quality new construction," then called nominees forward by category. Winners included McDonald's (commercial renovation), Zaxby's (design and excellence), H. H. Hunt Homes (infill project), Barking Dog (third-place category), and The Point (top placemaking award).
Council and staff thanked volunteers and the placemaking committee and invited winners to remain for photographs. The council recessed for 10 minutes following the ceremony.
