Events DC cites $815 million economic impact in FY25 as it readies for NFL Draft and RFK work

Chair Anita Bonds opened a Feb. 11 oversight hearing of the Committee on Executive Administration and Labor by asking Events DC to describe its FY25 work and plans. "My name is Angie Gates, and I am honored to serve as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Washington Convention and Sports Authority known as Events DC," Gates said, and she walked the committee through the authority's mission and portfolio.
Events DC told the committee it operated 11 venues in FY25 and supported large national and international events. In oral testimony the agency reported 428 conventions and events across the city and said the organization's operations and events produced an estimated $815,251,000 in total economic impact. Gates highlighted marquee events such as WWE and WorldPride and said WWE alone produced roughly $39,700,000 in overall economic impact and generated about $2,300,000 in taxes from the event's gate.
The agency framed sports and large activations as a strategic growth area: Gates described a sports-study due to the Council by April 10 and noted work to leverage RFK festival grounds and the CareFirst Arena to expand summer programming and festival bookings. "We want people to come and we're going to do everything to come," she said, summarizing a "Double C Factor" strategy — bringing visitors and creating new events.
The presentation and questioning established that the $815.3 million figure represents Events DC's portfolio-wide impact for FY25 (not the Convention Center alone) and that the authority is positioning the district to host the 2027 NFL Draft and other large-league activations. Chair Bonds and committee members pressed for venue-level detail and follow-up materials on attendance, room nights and geographic distribution of benefits; Events DC provided convention-center-specific statistics in response (114 events at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center; convention attendance of 718,561; 445,000 room nights).
