Hampton recognizes local groups and volunteers for veteran housing and services

Hampton Mayor George Wallace and emcee Brian Mukasey Thursday evening recognized local agencies, military-affiliated groups and volunteers for recent projects supporting veterans, including the city's participation in the nationwide 100 Day Challenge and a November stand down event. "From a grateful community, we would like to present this recognition to you for the the assistance that you render our veterans and to the homeless generally," Mayor George Wallace said as awards were handed to participating organizations.
Mukasey described the Peninsula effort as a success, saying the team "surpassed their goal for the challenge by housing more than 104 veterans." City staff and nonprofit partners called out a long list of contributors — including the Hampton VA Medical Center, the Hampton Newport News Community Services Board, local VFW posts, churches, the Salvation Army and numerous civic volunteers — and emphasized continued outreach and assistance. The program concluded with thanks to volunteers and a reminder that some housing vouchers remain available to support veterans.
