Hampton council adopts ordinance allowing virtual meetings and emergency procedures during COVID-19

The Hampton City Council adopted an ordinance designed to implement emergency procedures and permit virtual meetings for matters that, if delayed, could cause irreparable harm during the COVID-19 emergency. City staff said the city attorney's office developed the ordinance to provide procedures ensuring continuity of government.
“What this ordinance will allow us to do is to continue to meet virtually, should the need be there,” a city official said during the presentation. The ordinance acknowledges the director of emergency management's declarations (original and as amended 03/17/2020) and sets procedures for meetings and operations for the duration of the COVID-19 disaster.
A motion and second were announced and council members voted to adopt the ordinance during the special session. Council members recorded 'Aye' on the motion, and the ordinance was adopted to allow the city to conduct essential business virtually when required by the emergency.
