Board OKs up-to-$725,000 cap and reserves funds for high school gym remodel

The Sesser-Valier School Board voted unanimously Dec. 8 to increase the high school's gym remodeling budget to a not-to-exceed $725,000 and reserve additional funds for the project. The motion, made by Packer and seconded by Lance, carried on a 7–0 roll call.
Superintendent J. Henry told the board he recommended adding $175,000 to the project estimate since recent subcontractor pricing and project additions raised costs; that recommendation included a $50,000 contingency to "cover" any price changes or unexpected conditions. Henry reported he had already issued a purchase order to Carroll Seating for the bleacher component using the Buy Board cooperative pricing agreement and anticipated issuing additional purchase orders in the next one to two months to secure subcontractors. He said he intends to apply for a Fiscal Year 2026 School Maintenance Program grant in January 2026 with proceeds designated for the remodel.
Board members stressed fiscal oversight as the project moves into procurement and construction phases; the board approved the reservation of funds to allow work to proceed without requiring further board action up to the $725,000 cap.
