Mayor: City Hall remediation underway after discovery of uncapped chimney

Mayor Evan Hellenga opened the Feb. 9 planning meeting and said the session would address "current needs, immediate needs and projects needed in the future." City staff immediately flagged water intrusion at City Hall as a priority.
Public Works Director Randy Smith said crews "have discovered a chimney that has no cap, could be where the water is coming into [the] bottom floor; a cap is being made" and described on-site remediation including painting stairwells. City Manager Fredda O. Wheeler told commissioners the city will work with contractors to install a French drain around the chimney and place dehumidifiers downstairs and in the Finance Director's suite.
The discussion did not include a work schedule or a final cost estimate. Commissioners were asked to prioritize projects during the upcoming budget process to determine funding for the remediation and any additional renovations.
