Parent urges immediate investigation after cosmetology instructor's comments to student

Amy Cheek addressed the Buffalo ISD Board during public comment and said her daughter, a minor, was told by a male cosmetology instructor that her body "looked really big in her pants," language Cheek described as a boundary violation and a Title IX concern. She urged the board for "a transparent investigation, clear enforcement of professional conduct standards, protection for retaliation, and lastly, his immediate termination."

"This is about professional boundaries," Cheek said, adding that longevity or character references should not excuse inappropriate conduct. Board chair responded that trustees could not comment immediately but said the board would discuss the matter in private session. The board later signaled it would take the concern under advisement and indicated personnel follow-up would occur out of public session.

The allegation was raised during the public-comment period; Cheek said district registration and employee contracts make expectations clear and that, in her view, the reported response from district staff about termination thresholds set the bar too low. Trustees did not make an immediate public determination about discipline during the meeting; the board chair stated the matter would be discussed in closed session.
