Surgoinsville approves recorder pay increase; town records $25,000 payment and notes interfund sewer debt

At its June 24 special meeting the Surgoinsville Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved a pay increase for town recorder Megan Gentry and received financial updates on the town’s sewer accounts.
Alderman Bishop moved to increase Recorder Megan Gentry’s hourly pay by $3.50 in recognition of her obtaining CMFO (Certified Municipal Finance Officer) certification; Vice‑Mayor Jarnagin seconded the motion and the board approved it on a roll call vote. Alderman Bishop then moved that the $3.50/hour increase be made retroactive to March 1, 2025; Alderman Hoss seconded and that motion also passed on roll call.
Recorder Megan Gentry told the board that the Hawkins County School Board paid the town $25,000 for a flowmeter installed between Surgoinsville Elementary and Surgoinsville Middle Schools by The Lane Group in 2023; that payment was deposited into the Sewer Checking account. Gentry also reported the Sewer Fund currently owes the General Fund approximately $40,000.
The minutes do not record public comment on the pay change or provide documentation showing the town’s updated payroll totals or the sewer rate revenue impacts that would offset the interfund balance. The board concluded the special session at 5:50 p.m.
