The Boyne City Public Schools board approved a packet of updated policies that includes revisions addressing mandatory reporting and protections for vulnerable adults served by the district.
Staff noted the policy committee raised a specific question about whether mandatory-reporting duties apply to vulnerable adults (roughly ages 18–26 in district programs) and whether that duty extends to incidents observed off school grounds. The policy committee recommended the language but sought legal clarification.
"I would rather wait. I'd rather table this," Chair (speaker 1) said during discussion, urging caution until the district's legal contact provides guidance. Staff (speaker 2) countered that approving the policy tonight would be more efficient and that the board could reopen the policy if the legal opinion suggests changes.
After discussion the board approved the policies packet. Staff said they would forward the legal clarification when it arrives and would recommend any necessary adjustments to the board at a future meeting.
