Boyne City schools face $145,000 shortfall after state funding changes, district told

Irene, the district finance presenter, told the Boyne City Public Schools board the most recent state funding adjustments replace a projected per-pupil increase with a new funding category and that the net effect for the district is a roughly $145,000 shortfall from its adopted budget assumptions.
"So for Boyne City, this is a loss of 145,000 from what we budgeted," Irene said, explaining that category changes (including a new MPSERS-related line) removed earlier per-pupil dollars the district had counted on. She said the district will address the shortfall during its routine budget-amendment process this winter and that it does not require an immediate amendment now.
Board members asked clarifying questions about the state categories and timing. Irene said some districts will see positives in the revised formula (for example, higher GSRP eligibility), but for Boyne City the net effect is negative. She recommended waiting to amend the budget until the district’s formal amendment window rather than making immediate changes.
The board did not take an immediate vote on budget amendments at the meeting; staff said auditors are on-site this week and that the district will return with details when the amendment is prepared.
