The ordinance, numbered 87‑61, was moved and seconded during the council session and approved by roll call. Brian Maron, president of the Boulder Association of Fire Fighters, described the agreement with city leadership as a cooperative outcome: "We fully support it." The measure, if approved by voters, would add a new Section 73 to the city charter to specify bargaining rights and impasse procedures for firefighters.
City and union representatives said the text before council is the result of months of negotiation rather than a petition drive. Council members who spoke in favor framed the vote as a way to formalize a negotiated agreement and give voters the final say. The measure will appear on the coordinated municipal ballot on Nov. 3, 2026.
