Parent urges schools to expand diabetes awareness after daughter’s diagnosis

The parent said the family and students created a design for a school shirt, held a fundraiser and encouraged everyone to wear blue on World Diabetes Day, Nov. 14. “We hung up posters, shared facts about the condition over the daily announcements, and encouraged everyone to wear blue on November 14,” the parent said. She said the school community provided support after the diagnosis and that the activity connected students who also have type 1 diabetes.
The parent said the effort raised almost $300 used to buy testing supplies and items to support students in each of the district’s three buildings. She asked the board to consider making the event annual and to explore mentoring opportunities across buildings so younger students with type 1 diabetes can connect with older students who manage the condition.
Board members thanked the family for sharing the experience. The parent noted the school’s practical support — classroom help, office support and the school nurse — and highlighted the value of peer connections for students with chronic health needs.
