Burton approves new contract with Texas Commercial Waste limited to hand pick-up

The council approved a contract with Bryan Iron and Metal Company, Inc., d/b/a Texas Commercial Waste for residential and commercial hand-pickup service. The contract specifies that the contractor will provide once-weekly collection for residential solid waste and sets service parameters including bag weight limits and brush-bundle limits; roll-off service will be provided at rates to be determined between the contractor and the city.
Councilmember Paul McLaughlin moved and Councilmember Nathan Kalkhake seconded the motion to approve the contract; the motion passed. The contract text in the packet states the contractor shall provide once-weekly collection and that residential customers must present garbage in plastic bags no heavier than 50 pounds with a weekly limit of six bags per customer. Exhibit A in the contract packet lists rates for hand-pickup: residential once-per-week collection at $13.00 per unit per month and commercial once-per-week collection at $900 per unit per month (as shown in the contract exhibit).
The contract is exclusive for hand-pickup within the city limits but explicitly allows commercial customers who require dumpster service to contract with other providers better able to meet those needs. Insurance, indemnification and performance standards are detailed in the contract packet.
