Council authorizes city employee benefits renewal with lower projected medical costs

The presenter said the negotiated renewals represent a roughly 5.5% reduction in the city’s projected medical premium cost compared with earlier projections and would reduce employee premiums in many tiers. "We saw a 5.5 percent reduction in our medical yearly premium cost," the benefits presenter stated, describing the brokered results and plan design changes the city is recommending. Staff recommended authorizing the city manager to place benefits with the selected carriers in amounts not to exceed the totals stated in the motion.
Council discussed employer contribution levels and employee service considerations; staff said they had surveyed municipal peers and incorporated employee feedback about dental and vision service issues in their vendor choice. Council approved the staff recommendation to place medical, dental and vision with UnitedHealthcare and basic/voluntary life with Reliance Matrix, and authorized the city manager to execute the contracts in the amounts presented.
