Burton council adopts ordinance revising Laas-Weeren Park rules, repeals alcohol ban

The Burton City Council on Aug. 13 approved Ordinance 20240813 updating rules for Laas-Weeren City Park and repealing the previous ban on alcoholic beverages on park property.
The ordinance text states in part, "It shall be unlawful for any person to enter into or upon the city park between the following hours..." and establishes park hours (10:00 p.m.–6:00 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays; 9:00 p.m.–6:00 a.m. Sunday–Thursday), a ban on camping and open fires, a prohibition on loitering and panhandling, and a fine of up to $200 per violation. The ordinance repeals prior park rules and becomes effective Aug. 13, 2024.
Councilmember Paul McLaughlin moved to approve the ordinance and Councilmember Tommie Gilmon seconded; the motion passed. The council also clarified that donations and improvements to the park require prior council approval and become city property.
