Firefighters thank council for LEOS multiplier pledge and press for staffing and pay‑scale fixes

Paul Nichols, president of the Hampton Professional Firefighters Association Local 2450, addressed council in support of the manager's proposed 1.85 LEOS multiplier and a 3% wage increase. He thanked council and asked that the city address the lack of a vehicle to move employees through the pay scale, saying the former merit‑based system has not been funded for many years. "We come we originally came here tonight to talk about the the multiplier, but that's why it's gonna be taken care of, and we'd like to thank y'all, for doing that," Nichols said.
Nichols also raised staffing concerns, telling the council the department is currently "5 firefighters short of meeting that standard, per day," a reference to NFPA 1710 minimum staffing guidance for engine companies. He asked the council to re‑examine staffing and pay‑scale mechanics as the budget is finalized.
