Willard council approves ban on parking along 300 North after public hearing

Willard City Council voted to adopt Ordinance No. 2026-10, which prohibits parking on 300 North, following a public hearing and discussion of enforcement and safety issues. The ordinance passed on a roll-call vote after councilmembers heard concerns that the restriction could displace parked vehicles to nearby streets during peak events.

Resident Doug Younger told the Council that banning parking on 300 North could shift the problem to 100 East and 100 North, especially around the Fourth of July when large numbers of visitors come to the Nature Park. Councilmember Jordan Hulsey acknowledged that 100 East has historically been difficult to keep clear and City Attorney Amy Hugie recommended consulting the police chief about enforcement practicality; Mayor Travis Mote, participating remotely, called the situation a "mixed bag." Councilmember Mark Murphy said the city owns a large unpaved area north of the pump house near the ball fields that could hold about 40 vehicles within walking distance of the park as an overflow option.

After discussion, the Council approved the ordinance as presented, with the understanding that parking concerns on other streets would be addressed separately. A motion to approve Ordinance No. 2026-10 was made by Councilmember Jacob Bodily and seconded by Councilmember Diana Mund; a roll-call vote recorded Councilmember Bodily — Aye; Councilmember Mund — Aye; Councilmember Braegger — Aye; Mayor Mote — Aye. Council also agreed to place 100 East parking on a future agenda for additional consideration and potential amendment.
