Multiple witnesses and advocates told the commission that people housed at the 201 Poplar intake facility face medical neglect, denied sick calls, incorrect medication distribution and staff retaliation. Laramie Wheeler of Just City said the complaints are consistent across letters and reports and urged the commission to act.
"These are not isolated complaints. They are part of a troubling pattern," Wheeler said, summarizing numerous allegations including open wounds not receiving daily care, macing of medically fragile individuals, and grievances that are inaccessible. Commissioners asked county staff and legal counsel about what remedies exist, and some members urged the sheriff's office to be held accountable because the sheriff administers the jail.
Commissioners requested more information on legal recourse and the administration noted the tort fund and litigation dynamics as a leverage point, while some urged referral to the appropriate committee or follow-up with jail administrators.
