Chairperson Breanne Nadeau convened a public roundtable to consider PR 2054, the resolution to confirm Julian Purdy as director of the Mayor's Office on Veterans Affairs. Purdy, who testified under oath, described nearly two decades of federal veterans policy and administration experience and said he was "grateful to Mayor Mary O'Bowser for nominating me" to the post.
Purdy said he will organize MOVA around three pillars: supporting the "whole veteran" by linking federal and local services, encouraging youth to view public service as a career pathway, and building a connected network of veteran service organizations so providers stop operating in isolation. He gave examples of programmatic priorities including outreach symposiums, improved Veteran Service Officer capacity, and partnerships with programs like Vets Rides and Pathways to Work to ease access to benefits.
Chairperson Nadeau pressed Purdy on staffing and metrics; Purdy responded that MOVA currently has two Veterans Service Officers and cited FY25 service totals and fiscal-year-to-date recoveries as measures of activity. He discussed limits set by federal funding for vouchers and said the office would prioritize connecting veterans with existing resources and expanding community outreach. Purdy also highlighted the office's work addressing LGBTQ+ veterans through a newly hired coordinator and ongoing surveys to assess needs.
The roundtable concluded with the chair thanking Purdy for his testimony and inviting any additional written submissions for the record. No formal committee vote on PR 2054 was recorded in the public hearing transcript.
