Canyon seeks Byrne JAG funds for third year of police hiring project

Chief of Police Steven Brush told the commission the Canyon Police Department is applying to the Office of the Governor through the Panhandle Regional Planning Commission for FY2027 Byrne JAG funds as year three of a five-year officer hiring project. "This is the third year of a five-year project to hire a police officer," Brush said, explaining the grant initially covered 100% of salary and that the city's share increases each year.
Brush told commissioners the current application would fund 60% of the officer's salary and benefits for the coming year. Commissioners voted unanimously to adopt Resolution No. 03-2026 authorizing submission and administration of the grant; the resolution also authorizes the chief of police to represent the city in grant matters.
