Springfield board approves large personnel slate including new hires, retirements and coaching appointments

The Springfield Board of Education on June 29 approved a sweeping personnel package that the administration said is needed to staff the district for the 2026–27 school year. The resolution authorized the superintendent to offer employment contracts between meetings in July and August, with the Board affirming those contracts at the next public meeting. Board President Meredith Murphy opened the session by reading the meeting notice, noting in part that "Pursuant to the New Jersey Open Public Meetings Act, Public Law 1975, Chapter 231, the Board Secretary caused notice of the meeting to be given to the public and the press," before the Board moved into the consent items.
Among the hires and appointments approved were Theodore Cosmas (registered nurse, FMG), Adam Fromowitz (physical & health education teacher, EVW), Xiaoping Jiang (Assistant Business Administrator/Assistant Board Secretary), and Raymond Lepski (Director of Athletics and Physical Education, $128,000). The board also accepted resignations and a retirement: Alexis Rodriguez (instructional aide) and Megan Kelly (elementary teacher, retiring July 1, 2026). The athletics slate included head and assistant coach appointments across fall, winter and spring sports, many contingent on background clearance and some contingent on athlete participation. Approval was by recorded voice vote on the consent agenda: AYE 5, NAY 0.
The vote bundled dozens of line-items—substitutes, before/after-school staff, summer program instructors and extra-curricular advisors—so the administration can finalize schedules and payroll ahead of the new school year. Vice President Tracey Rinaldi presided during much of the personnel discussion as the board acted on the superintendent’s recommendation; board members noted contingency language on several coaching hires where participation numbers determine whether a position remains funded.
What happens next: individual contract letters will be issued by the superintendent for appointments made between meetings, and the board will affirm those contracts in public as required by statute. The personnel package approved June 29 takes effect with the 2026–27 school year and includes salaries and account numbers recorded in the meeting documents.
