Coroner: 28 deaths last month; some cases pending toxicology

Betty Nye, Vernon County coroner, told the board the county recorded 28 deaths last month: "17 male, 11 female, 17 cremation, 11 burials," and that most were coroner cases. She said accidental determinations included a highway flagger death and a diabetic patient whose autopsy showed "high levels of acute meth toxicity in addition to a pulmonary embolus."
Nye said several cases are awaiting state follow-up or toxicology results and that the state forensic pathologist guided her to rule one case accidental because toxic methamphetamine levels were a contributing factor. Board members pressed for clarification on pending findings; Nye said the state is conducting its own investigations and "they have not gotten back to me."
