District outlines MTSS expansion and 'Foundations' behavior supports ahead of school year

Assistant Superintendent Dr. Megan Aseltine presented the district's Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) as the framework to organize instruction and social-emotional interventions so that students receive the right level of support when data indicate a need. She described MTSS as a system that "uses data to guide decisions" and ensures high-quality instruction with tiered supports and progress monitoring.
Related Services Coordinator Sarah Kalinowski reviewed the Safe and Civil Schools "Foundations" program, which the district is using to establish consistent expectations, emphasize prevention over punishment, and recognize positive behaviors. The administration said staff training on behavior management, culture and climate will be a focus of Institute Days Aug. 20–21 and that paraprofessionals will receive two full days of training Aug. 18–19.
Board members heard that these initiatives are supported by instructional coaches and curriculum partnerships and will be monitored during the year for their effectiveness in improving school culture and student outcomes.
