Trustee Madeleine England said the Illinois Department of Transportation is proposing changes to Lincoln Avenue that could alter traffic flow in front of Lincoln Junior High and requested district follow-up with the Village of Skokie.
"They will be implementing a 'road diet' strategy - reducing from 4 lanes of traffic to 2 lanes and adding a middle turning lane accessed from either direction. They also plan to add bike lanes on each side of the street," England told the board. She noted she attended an IDOT public input session earlier that evening and directed administration to coordinate with village traffic engineers and consider submitting official district comments.
Superintendent Dr. Margaret Clauson said the district will arrange a meeting with Village traffic staff to understand timing and any impacts on student drop-off, bus routes and safety plans. Trustee England highlighted that IDOT's public comment period runs through Aug. 8 and that the district intends to review the presentation posted on IDOT’s website before submitting feedback.
A district-led review, coordinated with the Village, will focus on traffic operations near school arrival and dismissal times, the placement of bike lanes relative to school entrances, and whether changes require adjustments to bus routing or crossing supervision. The board did not take a formal vote; the item was recorded as a directive for staff follow-up.
