Sarah Pearl, the district's Spanish teacher, asked the board to approve posting a planned student trip to the Dominican Republic during the Presidents' Day break in February 2028. She said the current EF quote is about $4,500 per student and described the itinerary as combining cultural and museum tours with adventure activities such as zip lining, white-water rafting, snorkeling and surf lessons. "We've never done that before," Pearl said, and noted that the payment schedule she referenced would place monthly payments at just over $200 per student.
Pearl said the program includes environmental components — visits to mangroves, reforestation activities and sites such as Tres Ojos Caves — and that the district's policy allows district employees to travel as paid chaperones and to bring high-school–age children. She asked if the board would allow the trip to be posted for approval; members discussed where to place the item on the agenda and agreed to add it for a vote placement discussion later in the meeting.
