Council authorizes drafting ordinances to align town firearms code with state law

Thomas Benavidez identified specific code sections under review — Section 18.100.210(D)(1) (Weapons Merchant Prohibited Home-Based Business Use), Section 9.20 (Minors Prohibited From Carrying Firearms) and Section 2.55.070 (Fees Chargeable By Police Before Firearms Transfer) — and said the changes are intended to bring town code into compliance with state preemption. Benavidez advised the council that the town currently prohibits some conduct that state law does not.
The council voted unanimously to authorize the attorney to prepare the necessary ordinances. No ordinance text was presented at the meeting; the authorization was to begin drafting and return to council for future consideration and formal adoption.
