Huachuca City officials outline candidate rules, key deadlines for 2026 election

Town Attorney Thomas Benavidez briefed Huachuca City council members on the 2026 election schedule and candidate filing considerations.
Benavidez said seats for three council positions (incumbents Cynthia Butterworth, Debra Trate and Geovona Thompson) and the office of mayor (incumbent Johann Wallace) are on the Nov. 3, 2026 general election ballot. He told the council the town does not hold a primary for these nonpartisan offices. He also recited statutory timing: voter registration closes Oct. 5, 2026 at midnight (A.R.S. §16-120; §16-134) and early voting begins under A.R.S. §16-542(C).
On eligibility and resign-to-run questions, Benavidez advised that incumbents whose terms do not expire this year must resign before seeking a different office; those whose terms expire this year may run without resigning. Council discussion followed but no formal policy change or ordinance was adopted at this meeting.
