A commission representative (speaker 2) told the council the commission seeks approval tonight for two sites: Beaver Leaf Fountain House (GPR line items totaling $18,090) and Owen Cochrane Mill (GPR for $7,407), adding “So the total of that for this request would be $25,497.” The representative said the work will advance the commission’s goals to document and protect multiple sites around the city.
Commission member (speaker 3) explained why the radar work is necessary: at Owen Cochrane Mill the team knows generally where ruins are located but needs precise mapping, and at Beaverleaf Mountain House prior grading by the last occupants has obscured foundation locations. “Ground penetrating radar will hopefully identify where things were located,” the member said, adding that the results would inform placements for future park build-out to preserve historically significant features.
Separately, the commission requested approval to buy and install a Scout Hut historic marker from Lakeshore Industries at a cost of $4,609.82, to be funded from the Historic Preservation Commission budget. The commission circulated a color proof and said final siting would be coordinated with public-works staff to maximize visibility from Ricco Road and public parking areas.
Council did not raise substantive questions at the work-session preview; staff and the commission indicated placement logistics and exact siting will be finalized before installation.
